Clothes are a character of their own on Netflix’s Sirens.
The five-episode limited series premiered on May 22 and follows Devon (Meghann Fahy) as she tries to convince her sister Simone (Milly Alcock) to leave the luxurious beach town where she’s spent months working for Michaela Kell (Julianne Moore) and her billionaire husband, Peter (Kevin Bacon).
Sirens has everything fans have come to expect from a limited series: meme-worthy characters, drama and aesthetics galore. The show’s New England-inspired wardrobe — the plethora of colorful Lilly Pulitzer clothing in particular — is already making an impression on viewers.
In an interview with Variety published on Friday, May 23, show creator Molly Smith Metzler explains that the characters’ clothing was inspired by her time spent in coastal New England towns, specifically Nantucket.
“My best friend has a house there, and it’s for real,” she told the outlet. “Lilly Pulitzer is for real. They all have it on in Nantucket. Then there’s the Nantucket reds, the salmon color pants. The first time you see it, you’re like, ‘Where am I?’ It’s so bright. It’s sort of like, if you’ve been there, you’re in on the joke, you know the pants to buy.”

“It also takes a certain status to put on a dress like the one Simone has on when we meet her,” Metzler adds, referring to the pink floral dress viewers see Alcock in during one of her first scenes in episode 1.
However, the playwright and screenwriter revealed that the majority of the Lilly Pulitizer-esque clothing on the show is custom-made.

“I love Lilly, I have some Lilly, but it’s a little ridiculous,” she shared. “There’s something so saturated and bright about it. We’re so fortunate [Caroline Duncan], our costume designer, took that and just ran with it — most of the stuff on the show that looks like Lilly Pulitzer is actually custom.”
Metzler also addresses the lockets that all of the “sirens” wear, saying that the jewelry is a “status symbol” in Nantucket.

“It’s something you can only buy in Nantucket, they’re called basket necklaces, and they usually have ivory from Wales in them,” she explains. “But they’re very expensive, they’re handmade and everyone in Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard is wearing them.”
The show creator goes on to describe the piece as “a little culty.”
“It’s a little like wearing a cross, like a religion,” she says. “You know something that everyone else doesn’t.”
