Mohamed Salah said he wants Virgil van Dijk to follow his lead by signing a new contract at Liverpool after the captain’s 89th-minute winner at home to West Ham sent the Reds 13 points clear at the Premier League summit with six games remaining.
Top scorer Salah announced he had extended his contract until 2027 on Friday, leaving Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold – who is expected to join Real Madrid – as Liverpool’s star players whose terms end at the conclusion of the campaign.
“I’m glad we managed to do it early, before the end of the season,” Salah told Sky Sports about his extension, which will last until his 10th year at Anfield.
“Hopefully, Virgil will be next. He can do whatever he wants, but I would love to see him again next year.”

Van Dijk: ‘I love Liverpool’
Van Dijk met Alexis Mac Allister’s corner to seal a nervy victory and leave his side needing a maximum of six points for a 21st title in their history.
The centre-back’s clearance had hit Andy Robertson and found the back of the net three minutes earlier as West Ham deservedly drew level after Luis Diaz had slotted in Salah’s cross to put Liverpool ahead in the 18th minute.

“I’m very proud to captain my 100th game for Liverpool,” Van Dijk said. “The main focus was to get a step closer to all of our dreams – not only us as players and staff, but everybody connected to Liverpool. Everybody knows how much I love this club.”

Mo Salah goals and assists
Salah marked his new deal at Liverpool by breaking a record held by Thierry Henry and Erling Haaland when he set up Diaz for the opener.
The assist ensured the Egypt superstar broke the record of 44 goals and assists in a 38-game Premier League season, set by Arsenal’s Thierry Henry in 2002/03 and matched by Erling Haaland for Manchester City 20 years later.

Premier League top scorers: Salah eyes Golden Boot
The 32-year-old took his tally to 27 goals and 18 assists in 32 top-flight appearances in 2024/25, with a fourth Golden Boot looming large.
Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, who has won the Golden Boot twice since Salah shared the accolade with Tottenham’s Son Heung-min in 2021/22, is six goals behind and may not feature again this season because of a foot injury.
Newcastle and Sweden hot shot Alexander Isak is third on the Premier League top scorer list, having netted 20 league goals.
“West Ham are a good team with a good plan,” said Salah. “They played better in the half and score. We did well in the last few minutes.”

Mohamed Salah salary
The deal Salah signed in July 2022 made him the highest-paid player in Liverpool’s history.
The 32-year-old’s lawyer and adviser, Ramy Abbas Issa, told a Harvard Business School study in 2023 that Salah earns at least £1 million a week in total income, boosted by factors such as his lucrative endorsements.
“Renewing at Liverpool would be one of the biggest milestones of my career,” Salah said in the study, via The Guardian.
“But we have to do this the right way. I’ve learned throughout my career that if you want to be successful, it is important to invest in yourself not just physically but also mentally.”
