Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has said the club faced a “really hard” predicament over backroom staff attending the 2025 Europa League final.
Amorim stepped in to pay for 30 backroom staff and their families to go to the final against Tottenham in Bilbao on May 21, according to ESPN, who said United required the Portuguese’s coaches, physios, and support team to pay for their own tickets.
“We have a lot of people leaving and a lot of change in the staff,” Amorim said when he was asked about the report. “Sometimes it’s hard to understand when to give and when to tell people we are taking their jobs in certain moments to survive and rebuild.
“It’s complicated for the club to start giving to other members of staff. It’s a really hard position. That situation was explained and my reaction was to help. It’s not going to change my life and the staff can more comfortable and a better staff for the final.”
Man United vs Tottenham: Players ‘wanted staff there’
United have made a number of cost-cutting measures since Sir Jim Ratcliffe became a co-owner of the club in February, with up to 200 job cuts said to be on the way this summer.
“The players had the same reaction – everybody wants the families and staff there,” said Amorim. “A final is different but you can understand that this season has been really tough on everyone – the results and the changes in staff.
“We had so many bad results in the Premier League so the environment is tough. But I can guarantee you that when we are preparing for a game in the Europa League, the environment is a little bit different and you can feel the excitement.”
Only the three sides inside the relegation zone have a worse tally than United’s record of 10 league wins this season, leaving the 20-time champions fifth-bottom and a point ahead of Spurs.

Will Ruben Amorim be sacked?
The Red Devils gave Amorim a contract until 2027 when he arrived from Sporting in November but the 40-year-old suggested he could leave soon if results do not improve following their 2-0 defeat at home on Sunday to a West Ham side who had been below them.
“I cannot see the team having these results – especially in the Premier League – and not say anything, and not take the responsibility,” said Amorim, who has repeatedly voiced grave concerns about his squad.
“I understand the problems of the team, so I am far from quitting. What I am saying is that we need to perform, or else they will change us. That is normal.”
Have Man United ever won the Europa League?
Lyon’s 5-4 aggregate defeat to Ajax in the 2016/17 semi-finals sent the Amsterdammers to the final against United, who had gone through with a 2-1 aggregate win over Celta Vigo.
Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored in a 2-0 win for United at the Friends Arena in Solna as they won the competition for the only time in their history.
