Pochettino quashes ‘unrealistic’ rumours of Tottenham return

Mauricio Pochettino has dismissed speculation linking him with a return to Tottenham, insisting that a comeback to North London is “not realistic” at this time.

The 53-year-old, currently in charge of the United States national team, has been linked with the vacancy at Spurs following the surprise dismissal of Ange Postecoglou on Friday.

Despite delivering the club’s first trophy in 17 years with a Europa League triumph, Postecoglou was relieved of his duties.

Pochettino, who spent five years at Tottenham before being sacked in November 2019, has been among the names touted for the job.

However, speaking after the USA’s 2-1 defeat to Turkey in Connecticut, he made clear that he has no plans to return to Spurs for now.

“Today it’s not realistic,” Pochettino said. “Look where I am. Look where we (his backroom staff) are. The answer is so clear.

“I think, since I left in 2019, my name has always been on the list [of rumours].

“I’ve seen the rumours, we are 100 coaches on the list. Don’t be worried about that.

“If something happens [in the future], you for sure will see, but I am so happy in this moment and we cannot talk about this type of thing.”

The Argentine took over the US men’s national team in October 2024 and has overseen nine matches so far, recording five victories and four defeats. The loss to Turkey marked the team’s third consecutive loss.

Pochettino is now focused on preparing the US squad for the 2026 World Cup, which they will co-host with Mexico and Canada.

During his previous stint at Tottenham, Pochettino led the club to a Champions League final in 2019 and secured a runner-up finish in the Premier League in 2016-17.
