Blue Origin’s newest crew is blasting off into space in style.
On April 14, Lauren Sánchez, Katy Perry, Gayle King, NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, astronaut and bioastronautics research scientist Amanda Nguyen, and filmmaker Kerianne Flynn are taking a near four-minute round-trip mission to the edge of space and, in a new interview with Elle, they revealed that they plan on doing so with a face of glam.
“Who would not get glam before the flight?!” said Sánchez, whose fiancé Jeff Bezos, founded the spaceflight company in 2000. “We’re going to have lash extensions flying in the capsule!”
“Will the lashes stay on? I’m curious,” asked King, to which Sánchez, 55, replied, “Mine are glued on. They’re good.”
Perry, 40, added: “Space is going to finally be glam. Let me tell you something. If I could take glam up with me, I would do that. We are going to put the ‘ass’ in astronaut.”

Bowe shared that she already has a makeup look and hairstyle in mind for the historic moment — and she put them to the test in the most surprising way. “I skydived in Dubai with similar hair to make sure I would be good—took it for a dry run,” she revealed.
Getting dolled up is more than just about looking good for the group of women too. “I think it’s so important for people to see us like that,” said Nguyen, who in February teamed up with e.l.f. Cosmetics for its empowering film series Show Your(s)e.l.f. “This dichotomy of engineer and scientist, and then beauty and fashion. We contain multitudes. Women are multitudes. I’m going to be wearing lipstick.”
Fashion, along with safety, of course, is also top of mind for the ladies, especially Perry whose first thought was, “What am I going to wear?”

Elsewhere in the interview, many of the crew members agreed that Blue Origin’s next mission is one they’ve been looking forward to for years, if not decades. King, who has expressed reservation about skyrocketing outside of Earth said despite her ongoing feelings of “trepidation” she is “really really excited.”
“I also know it’s very interesting to be terrified and excited at the same time. I haven’t felt like this since childbirth, really. Because I knew childbirth was going to hurt. But it’s also stepping out of your comfort zone,” said the CBS broadcaster, 70.

All six trailblazers will fly on the New Shepard rocket, which, as reported by Blue Origin’s website, will launch from Launch Site One in West Texas.
The mission’s patch includes six symbols representing the women. A shooting microphone symbolizes King’s “commitments to sharing important stories,” the fireworks a symbol of Perry’s influence on pop culture and music and Flynn the Fly nodding to Sanchéz’s children book The Fly Who Flew to Space. The star, scale of justice and film reel belong to Bowe, Nguyen and Flynn respectively.
According to Blue Origin, the mission will be the 11th human flight for the New Shepard program and the 31st in its history. So far, the company said the program has flown 52 people, including Star Trek actor William Shatner and Bezos himself. This would be the first all-female flight crew since Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s solo spaceflight in 1963.
