James Milner signs new Brighton deal, paving the way to make Premier League history

James Milner could break the Premier League appearance record after signing a 12-month contract extension at Brighton.

The 39-year-old has played 638 games in the English top flight, second only to Gareth Barry (653).

He may have surpassed the former Everton midfielder last season had it not been for injuries that restricted him to just four appearances.

Milner’s influence extends to off the pitch with Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler eager to talk up his importance in the dressing room.

Hurzeler hails Milner influence

Hurzeler told Brighton’s official website: “I’m really pleased we will have James with us again this season.

“Last season he wasn’t able to help the team on the pitch as much as he would have liked, but around the squad his experience is invaluable, especially for the younger players.

“He’s a great guy to have in our environment, who is always there for me and the team. I’m looking forward to working with him again.”

Milner started his career at Leeds before spells with Newcastle, Aston Villa, Manchester City and Liverpool before joining Brighton in 2023.

He has 61 England caps to his name and has won three Premier League titles and one Champions League.
