You know those moments when the universe seems to wink at you? This is one of those stories.
It all started on June 24th, 2022. We got an email with the subject line: “TV Documentary on the intimacy crisis facing young people.”
Naturally, we were intrigued. The email was from Alex Dizer, a producer working with Double Act, a UK production company. He wrote, “We’re developing a new TV series that explores the intimacy crisis facing young people in the UK, post-pandemic. Could this be something your team would be able to be involved with?”
Our jaws dropped. Not only was this exactly the kind of work we’re passionate about — it was also oddly perfect timing. Because (and I swear we didn’t plan this), Celeste was heading to London the very next week.
Of course, we replied immediately. “YES. This is 100% something we’d love to talk more about.”
Straight Into the Studio We Went
Fast forward to July 6th. Celeste met Alex and his colleague Larry for lunch in London. The connection was instant, and by the end of the meal, they were heading straight to a studio.
That very day, she was filmed sharing our vision for a show where we’d bring a group of young adults — many of them virgins — to a private island. There, they’d go through an immersive program designed to help them understand sex, relationships, emotional connection, and, maybe, even take their first steps into partnered intimacy.
Double Act quickly pulled together a sizzle reel that mixed Celeste’s interview with real footage of how we work with clients in a hands-on, experiential way. It was raw, honest, and deeply human. And Channel 4 loved it.
But What About the Science?
Because there’s always a but, the network wanted to make sure our methodology was grounded in real science. We were told we’d need to meet with their “science guy” before they’d officially give the green light.
Now, Somatica has always been rooted in science: from neuroscience and attachment theory, to somatic psychology and adult learning models. But we had never bundled it all up in one place before. So we sat down and created something we’re actually super proud of — an article called The Science Behind Somatica. Not only did it help solidify our approach for Channel 4, but it became a really helpful resource for our current and future students, too.
When we presented it, Jonah (aka the science guy) was impressed. And with that, the network gave us the green light.
Finding the Perfect Showrunner
Of course, getting a show off the ground is never an overnight process. Channel 4 wanted to wait until they could get the right showrunner. And when Tom Garland finally came on board, we totally understood why they waited.
Tom just got it. He understood how to balance heart and humor, vulnerability and structure. With his guidance, we started weekly planning meetings and built out the show’s “bible” — a detailed roadmap of the Somatica tools, practices, and workshop experiences we wanted to bring to the island.
Our goal was to give these young people the real, practical support they needed to move through the challenges holding them back from the intimacy and connection they truly wanted.
More Than a Show — An Invitation to Feel More Deeply
What started as a single email turned into something so much bigger. A labor of love. A bold leap. And, hopefully, a show that will inspire more people to embrace their own journey toward deeper intimacy, sexual confidence, and real, human connection.
We can’t wait to share it with you. 💛
