Blaugrana extend lead at top despite draw

Barcelona extended their lead at the top of LaLiga to four points despite only drawing 1-1 with Real Betis.

The Blaugrana were looking to go six clear of Real Madrid after their loss earlier in the day, but could not take full advantage of the situation at hand.

It took just seven minutes for Barcelona to break the deadlock though. Lamine Yamal cut inside from the right and fed Ferran Torres, who delivered a perfectly weighted first-time pass to Gavi.

The midfielder, marking his 100th LaLiga appearance, ghosted into the box and slotted the ball past Adrian to give the hosts the lead.

However, Betis hit back almost immediately. Just ten minutes later, after Antony won a corner, Giovani Lo Celso delivered a cross to the towering Natan, who powered a header beyond Wojciech Szczesny to level the score.

Barcelona pushed to reclaim the lead with chances coming thick and fast. Pedri saw a powerful shot tipped over by Adrian, while both Torres and Yamal came close but failed to convert from promising positions.

The second half opened in a similarly high-octane fashion. Antony drove a shot wide for Betis just after the restart, and shortly after, Kounde was denied by a superb Adrian save after being slipped through by Pedri.

Hansi Flick rang the changes as the hosts continued their search for a winner, introducing Raphinha, Eric Garcia, and Fermin Lopez in a bid to break the deadlock.

The Brazilian winger almost made an instant impact with a fierce free-kick that Adrian did well to hold, before heading narrowly wide at the far post moments later.

Betis, meanwhile, were not content to sit back and made several attacking substitutions of their own, with Chimy Avila and Cedric Bakambu joining the fray.

Natan, already on the scoresheet, came close to a spectacular second with a long-range drive that forced Szczesny into a sharp save.

As the game entered the final 10 minutes, the intensity ramped up further. Barca had several late opportunities, including a chaotic sequence in which Yamal’s shot was blocked and Lewandowski’s overhead kick was headed clear.

Jules Kounde saw yellow for dragging down Rodriguez as tempers flared in the dying minutes.

In a bizarre moment near full-time, Llorente collided with both Gavi and the referee, halting a Barcelona counter and typifying the frenetic nature of the contest.
