Could he break Alan Shearer’s all-time Premier League goalscoring record?

Mohamed Salah’s new two-year deal at Liverpool means he will end his career statistically as one of the best strikers to have ever played in the Premier League.

The Egyptian is currently tied fifth in the all-time goalscoring list, level with former Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, and will likely move past him and potentially Andy Cole before the end of the season.

Liverpool have seven games left and Salah will want to finish on a high and help Arne Slot’s side over the line as they look to claim their first title since the 2019-2020 campaign.

That means there is a good chance Salah will end this term around the 190 mark.

What is the all-time list of the Premier League’s leading goalscorers?

  • Alan Shearer (260)
  • Harry Kane (213)
  • Wayne Rooney (208)
  • Andy Cole (187)
  • Sergio Aguero (184)
  • Mohamed Salah (184)
  • Frank Lampard (177)
  • Thierry Henry (175)
  • Robbie Fowler (163)
  • Jermaine Defoe (162)

Where could Salah end up at the end of his new deal?

We are coming towards the end of Salah’s eighth season at Anfield. If we go with that 190 figure, then Salah has averaged almost 24 league goals a season at Liverpool having also netted twice for Chelsea earlier in his career.

Two more years of scoring at the same rate would see him reach 238, which would be good enough for second all-time behind Alan Shearer.

What else could change the list?

By the time his new deal ends, Salah will have just celebrated his 35th birthday. Given the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are setting new benchmarks for the longevity of elite players – and Salah’s fitness levels appear as good now as when he was in his mid-20s – there is nothing to suggest he won’t stay longer.

And that opens up the possibility of him passing Shearer.

The only other active player in the top 10 is Harry Kane, who is now at Bayern Munich. However, there is a school of thought that suggests Kane has Shearer’s record in his sights and would like to return to England before his career is up.

What do the bookies say?

William Hill have Salah as a 4/1 shot to beat Shearer.

Spokesperson Lee Phelps said: “Mohamed Salah’s two year contract extension with Liverpool today has prompted us to revisit our market on whether the Egyptian will break the all-time Liverpool and Premier League goalscoring records.

“We make Salah a 4/1-shot to eclipse Alan Shearer’s 260 league goals and become the most prolific goalscorer in the history of the English top-flight, while he is odds-on at 4/6 to surpass Ian Rush’s tally of 229 league strikes for Liverpool.”
