Taylor Jenkins Reid is teasing her upcoming The Chicks-themed project.
During a recent appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, the best-selling author, 41, said, “We’re taking the story of ‘Goodbye, Earl,’ and we are making that a jukebox musical with all the discography of The Chicks.”
As host Kelly Clarkson praised the idea to take one of the country group’s most popular songs and turn it into a stage production — explaining that The Chicks’ “catalogue is insane” — Reid said the idea to do such came to her while she was driving.
“I was like, ‘This could be its own story, [and] what if you use the songs of The Chicks to tell that story?’ ” Reid, who recently released her new novel, Atmosphere, said.

Reid explained she then reached out to her friend, whom she described as a “fanatic who works in Broadway,” and pitched the idea.
When Clarkson, 43, pressed Reid to find out if “Cowboy Take Me Away,” another one of the country girl group’s most popular songs, would be part of the musical, the writer confirmed that the “Since U Been Gone” singer had nothing to worry about.
“Let me assure you, it will,” Reid told the mother of two.

Reid recently released Atmosphere on June 3. The book is set against the backdrop of the 1980s Space Shuttle program.
The author has written nine books total, including Daisy Jones & the Six, now a hit TV show starring Riley Keough, and Carrie Soto Is Back, which is being executive-produced by Serena Williams for Netflix.

Reid recently spoke with PEOPLE about seeing her books turned into films and television series, stating, “I’m incredibly privileged to be able to produce some of these adaptations.”
Still, she explained that she will continue to write page-turners first and foremost.
“The majority of my time in my day is writing books that I’m proud of. That’s the form that makes the most sense to me,” Reid said. “And just looking back on me trying to find my passion, it was books where I knew I had found it. And that has not changed.”
