Ruben Amorim says he will leave Man United without compensation if fans ‘feel I’m not the right guy’

Ruben Amorim has said he would leave his post “the next day” without a “conversation about compensation” if the club’s fans and board do not trust him.

Portuguese Amorim has been unable to change United’s trajectory since arriving from Sporting in November, with the 20-time Premier League champions fifth-bottom and beaten by Tottenham – the team between them and the relegation zone – in the Europa League final.

“I’m always open,” Amorim replied when he was asked about his record. “If the board and the fans feel I’m not the right guy, I will go the next day without any conversation about compensation.”

Ruben Amorim: Man United ‘pain’

Amorim, who was firmly on course for a third Portuguese title in five seasons when he left Sporting, said he “will not quit” without pressure from supporters and his bosses.

“I’m really confident about my job,” he added. “As you can see, I will not change [anything] in the way I do things.

“I have nothing to show to our fans – I am really honest with that. But I will continue to do things in the way I know.

“I have to share the pain with our fans; they deserve better. We will see what we are going to do about the future.”

Man United ‘better’ than Spurs in Europa League final

Brennan Johnson’s first-half strike proved the only goal of the final, but United were denied a second-half equaliser by Micky van de Ven’s acrobatic goalline clearance from Rasmus Hojlund’s header before Guglielmo Vicario brilliantly tipped away Luke Shaw’s close-range header.

“We were better than Tottenham,” claimed Amorim. “We tried everything in the second half. We were not perfect and we have a lot to improve.

“I am not going to be here defending myself – it’s not my style, I cannot do it. It’s [about] a little bit of faith.”

United will seek a first win in 10 games against English opposition when they host Aston Villa in their final match of 2024/25 on Sunday (16:00 BST).

Have Man United ever won the Europa League?

United lifted the trophy in 2016/17, reaching the final against Dutch giants Ajax courtesy of a 2-1 aggregate win over Celta Vigo.

Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored in a 2-0 victory over the Amsterdammers at the Friends Arena in Solna as they won the competition for the only time in their history.
